The parents of my students often ask me where they can brush up on their Spanish skills. I know there are a lot of Spanish language computer programs out there, and honestly, I have not checked them out. But I have checked out Coffee Break Spanish – and I love it! Coffee Break Spanish is a Spanish Language Course designed for beginners to intermediate language learners. It is composed of 15-20 minute lessons, perfect for your coffee break! You can listen to these lessons FREE at www.radiolingua.com (Look for the coffee mug in the bottom right corner.) For the serious students they do have an option to purchase an entire season along with lesson guides, word lists, and bonus materials, and you can download the lessons on to your iPod and listen to them anytime! There are 76 lessons offered online on this site for free. You can scroll back and begin at lesson 1, or check out the topics and pick up somewhere in the middle if there is something that interests you. The program is recorded in Scotland, and the hosts have lovely Scottish accents when they speak English – lots of fun to listen to. So if you are wishing you could remember more of that Spanish you learned in High School, or you are planning a warm vacation and want to make sure you can order food and drink, check out Coffee Break Spanish- I am sure you’ll love it too!

You can teach a student a lesson for a day; but if you can teach him to learn by creating curiosity, he will continue the learning process as long as he lives. ~Clay P. Bedford

And that is how I hope to inspire my students, with curiosity and interest that makes them lifelong language learners. I talk with so many adults who tell me how much they hated learning Spanish in Middle School or High School. And you know what? I didn’t love it either. It was boring. Tedious. I tested out of Spanish in college, but decided to take a class anyway. I had a great teacher who made it fun. And then I did a study abroad in Granada, Spain. In Granada I fell in love with Spanish, with the sounds, the words, the people, the music, and the food. I love speaking and listening to Spanish. I love teaching Spanish. I try to share this enthusiasm with my students so that they will be excited about learning Spanish. I believe that by creating a positive foreign language learning experience at a young age students will be more likely to continue their language learning in high school, college and beyond. And who know where it might take them!

¡Hola! We are finishing up our Fall session of Spanish classes at Hola Amigos. We had a wonderful season with lots of fun games, songs and crafts in Spanish class. The past couple of weeks the children have enjoyed revisiting some of the great songs we sang in class this Fall, such as “Juanito cuando baila”, “Los elefantes and Chocolate”.

To continue the fun at home, check out the music tab and play them for your child so he or she can sing and dance along. It is important to get the children excited about learning Spanish so they become life-long language learners. I strive to provide a positive second language learning experience and I do that by making Spanish class FUN!
